Élisabeth Revol

France

First woman to summit Nanga Parbat in winter (January 2018), followed by a dramatic high-altitude rescue in which her teammate died.

Élisabeth Revol (born 29 April 1979 in Crest, Drôme) is a French alpinist and former physical education teacher known for lean, oxygen-free ascents; in 2008 she linked Broad Peak, Gasherbrum and Gasherbrum II solo in 16 days in the Karakoram. On 25 January 2018 she and Polish climber Tomasz Mackiewicz reached the summit of Nanga Parbat in winter — making her the first woman to do so — but on the descent Mackiewicz developed severe frostbite and snow blindness; Revol secured him in a crevasse and called for help, and a rescue team led by Denis Urubko and Adam Bielecki reached her at 6,026 m on 27 January, while Mackiewicz could not be evacuated because of the weather. She was flown out weighing 45 kg with severe frostbite to her hands and left foot but avoided amputation, and in May 2019 climbed Everest (23 May) followed by Lhotse the next day.
