Ed Viesturs
United States
The first — and only — American to complete all 14 peaks above 8,000 m without bottled oxygen, finishing with Annapurna on 12 May 2005.
Ed Viesturs (born 22 June 1959 in Rockford, Illinois) is an American mountaineer and veterinarian who became the first — and only — American to summit all 14 eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen. He began climbing in the Himalaya in 1987 and completed his 14-peak collection with Annapurna on 12 May 2005, after three previous unsuccessful attempts on that mountain. Viesturs summited Everest seven times, six without oxygen, and wrote the popular memoir No Shortcuts to the Top (2006), chronicling his 18-year quest to complete the 14 eight-thousanders.
