Sir Chris Bonington (born 1934) is one of Britain's greatest mountaineers, leading landmark Himalayan expeditions including the first ascent of Annapurna South Face (1970) and the Southwest Face of Everest (1975). He summited Everest himself in 1985 at age 50, and was knighted in 1996.
