Cesare Maestri (1929-2021) was an Italian climber and mountaineer nicknamed the 'Spider of the Dolomites' for his many solos and hard new routes in the Dolomites. His name is tied to the Cerro Torre controversy in Patagonia: a disputed 1959 summit claim with Toni Egger, and the 1970 Compressor Route that used a compressor to place hundreds of bolts, sparking debate over climbing ethics.
