Versatile 1990s American alpinist who was killed by an avalanche on Shishapangma in 1999.

Stewart Alexander "Alex" Lowe (24 December 1958 – 5 October 1999) was an American mountaineer renowned for difficult ascents on rock, ice and high-altitude peaks worldwide. He established new routes in the Himalayas, Karakoram and the Tetons, and made first ascents in Antarctica and on Baffin Island. In 1995 he received the American Alpine Club's Underhill Award. Lowe was killed by an avalanche on Shishapangma, Tibet, in 1999 during an expedition aiming for the first American ski descent of an 8,000-metre peak; his remains were found in the glacier in 2016. He is commemorated by the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation.
