Description

Zomba Plateau, also called the Zomba Massif, is a flat-topped massif in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi, covering roughly 130 km² with a high point of 2,087 m at Mulumbe Peak. It rises directly above Zomba town, Malawi's former colonial capital, making it one of the most accessible hiking areas in the country. Unlike East Africa's volcanoes, Zomba is built of syenite eroded into a cliff-edged plateau, cloaked in a mix of native afromontane forest and pine plantation. Its trail network branches heavily and ranges from easy one-hour walks to full eight-hour traverses. The best-known destination is Chingwe's Hole, a natural shaft at the plateau's western rim wrapped in local folklore about spirits and the disposal of bodies in the past, though its actual depth is far more modest than the myth. Other highlights include William's Falls, Mulunguzi Dam, Songani Lookout, and the Emperor's View and Queen's View, named after royal visits in the 1950s and 1960s. Because junctions are confusing and mist can arrive fast, hikers usually take a local guide.

Routes

Chingwe's Hole via Mulumbe Peak (jalur puncak, dari Sunbird Ku Chawe)

Sedang; jalan kaki hutan dan jalan kehutanan, tanpa bagian teknis, tetapi percabangan jalur membingungkan
~6 jam pulang-pergi

Zomba's longest and most sought-after route, starting near the Sunbird Ku Chawe on the plateau rim. It strings together the plateau's three main draws in a single traverse: Mulumbe Peak, the 2,087 m high point; Chingwe's Hole, the folklore-wrapped natural shaft at the western rim overlooking the Shire Valley; and William's Falls with its small pools. Most of the walk passes through a mix of native afromontane forest and pine plantation. With many unmarked junctions, a local guide is strongly advised; the drop-offs at Chingwe's Hole and the viewpoints are unfenced.

Mulunguzi Nature Trail — Mandala Falls ke William's Falls

Mudah; jalan setapak menyusuri sungai, cocok untuk pemula dan keluarga
~2 jam

A short trail following the forested banks of the Mulunguzi river from Mandala Falls, past the Trout Farm, ending at William's Falls. It is known for its vegetation: dragon trees, birdsnest orchids, tree ferns, and Mulanje Cedar, Malawi's national tree. The easiest option on the plateau and often used as a warm-up before attempting the long route to Chingwe's Hole.

Songani Lookout dan Chivunde Falls

Sedang; jalur menengah, dapat dikombinasikan dengan jalur pulang lewat Ng'ondolo dan William's Falls
~5–6 jam

A middle-distance traverse to Songani Lookout on the plateau's eastern side, with sweeping views toward the Songani valley, then down past Chivunde Falls. Returning via the Ng'ondolo path and William's Falls makes a loop without retracing ground. Mist can roll in quickly at the lookout, so an early start is safer.

Climbing Experiences

Hikes on the Zomba Plateau nearly always start near the Sunbird Ku Chawe on the plateau rim, then branch into a network of one- to eight-hour trails. The most sought-after route runs to Chingwe's Hole and Mulumbe Peak (2,087 m, the high point), while a popular short walk reaches William's Falls along the Mulunguzi Nature Trail. Zomba content is dominated by Malawi travel vlogs and local blog write-ups; technical climbing reports are essentially absent, since the terrain is forest walking with no technical sections.
