Description

Zla Kolata (Montenegrin: Зла Колата; Albanian: Kolata e Keqe, meaning 'the Evil Kolata') is the highest point of Montenegro, reaching 2,534 m in the Rodi e Kollatës massif right on the border with Albania. The peak lies in the heart of the Prokletije Mountains—'Bjeshkët e Nemuna' or the 'Accursed Mountains'—the wildest and most jagged part of the Dinaric Alps. Rather than a volcano, it is a karst limestone summit with steep slopes and rock towers. Because it sits directly on the Albanian border (the true summit is slightly on the Albanian side according to some sources), the climb is often linked with the tri-border area and the popular cross-border Peaks of the Balkans trail. Ascents usually start from the Grbaja Valley near Gusinje/Vusanje in Montenegro, crossing forest, high pastures and then an exposed rock scramble to the summit ridge with a wide Prokletije panorama. The area is part of Montenegro's Prokletije National Park, known for its remoteness, wildlife and sharp alpine scenery.

Routes

Konteks jalur Peaks of the Balkans (lintas-batas)

Berat; trek multi-hari lintas Montenegro–Albania–Kosovo
Bagian dari trek ~10 hari

Zla Kolata lies in the Prokletije area crossed by the cross-border Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail—a famous loop of about 190 km linking Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo. Many hikers climb Zla Kolata (and neighbouring peaks such as Maja Kolata) as a side summit while walking this trail from a Vusanje/Theth base. This approach places the ascent of Montenegro's highest point within a larger Balkan mountain journey, with overnights in villages and guesthouses along the way. A passport is needed (many border crossings) and the trail requires special permits; check the latest regulations before setting out.

The main climbing route to Zla Kolata from the Montenegrin side, usually starting from the Grbaja Valley near Vusanje/Gusinje. The trail passes through forest and the high pastures of Prokletije before climbing steep slopes to the summit ridge. The final hundred metres are an exposed rock scramble that demands a head for heights—no casual walk, even without technical climbing gear. The summit (2,534 m) sits on the Montenegro–Albania border with a wide panorama of the 'Accursed Mountains'. Carry a passport as this is a border zone, start early to avoid afternoon storms, and beware of fog quickly closing over the ridge. As Montenegro's highest point, the summit is often combined with the cross-border Peaks of the Balkans trail.
