Description
Wheeler Peak (4,011 m / 13,161 ft) is the highest point in the U.S. state of New Mexico, rising in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near the arts town of Taos. The summit lies within the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of Carson National Forest and is named for George M. Wheeler, who led a 19th-century military survey. Two main trails reach the top: the shorter but steeper Williams Lake Trail from Taos Ski Valley, and the much longer Bull-of-the-Woods/Wheeler route. Most of the climb crosses alpine tundra above treeline, where marmots and bighorn sheep are often seen. Technically it is straightforward, but the altitude, distance, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms make it physically demanding — hikers are advised to start at dawn and descend before midday.

Bull-of-the-Woods / Wheeler Peak Trail

Sedang–berat (nonteknis, curam)Jalur terpopuler dan terpendek menuju puncak. Dari Taos Ski Valley menuju Williams Lake, lalu menanjak tajam lewat serangkaian switchback ke punggungan dan puncak. Meski pendek, kenaikan elevasinya besar dan sebagian besar di atas batas pepohonan sehingga terpapar cuaca.
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Wheeler Peak is usually a long day hike to the highest point in New Mexico, most often via the Williams Lake Trail from Taos Ski Valley. Trip reports stress the steep switchbacks above treeline, the thin air near 4,000 m, the alpine-tundra panoramas, and the importance of an early start to beat afternoon thunderstorms.
