Description

Wheeler Peak (4,011 m) is New Mexico’s highest point in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Taos Ski Valley and within the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of Carson National Forest. Wikidata Q1505965 identifies this New Mexico summit. The Williams Lake approach uses trail #62 and then Summit Trail #67; trail #90 from Bull of the Woods offers a longer approach through Frazer Mountain and La Cal Basin. Summer hiking involves lightning exposure, and the trail reference recommends reaching the summit before noon. In winter and spring, trail #67 can carry deep snow and avalanche hazards; summer trail descriptions do not represent those conditions.
