Description
Waw an Namus (واو الناموس, meaning 'oasis of mosquitoes'; also spelled Wau-en-Namus or Uau en Namus) is a remote volcano in the eastern Fezzan region of Libya, deep in the Sahara. Its name refers to the small lakes within its caldera that sustain colonies of mosquitoes. Its most striking feature is a caldera roughly 4 km wide and about 100 m deep, ringed by an apron of dark tephra (volcanic ash) that contrasts sharply with the bright surrounding Sahara sand — from satellite imagery and on the ground it looks like 'a piece of another planet'. Inside the caldera stands a scoria cone about 140 m high with a summit crater, surrounded by several small salt and freshwater lakes and stands of reeds. Radiometric dating suggests an age of about 200,000 years, though some evidence points to a much younger formation (Holocene or even historical times). The site is uninhabited but lay on the ancient Kufra–Sebha caravan route, and ancient graves have been found nearby. Its beauty makes it a desert-travel target, but extreme remoteness and Libya's conflict make access very difficult.

Routes
SourceJalur karavan Kufra–Sebha (pendekatan bersejarah)
SourceClimbing Experiences
Because of Libya's remoteness and security situation, coverage of Waw an Namus is dominated by geology documentaries and desert-expedition footage rather than ordinary hiking vlogs. Clips show the black tephra apron ringing the caldera, the central scoria cone, the small salt and freshwater lakes with reeds, and the dramatic contrast of the dark volcanic colours against the Sahara sand — often described as 'a piece of Mars or the Moon on Earth'.
