Description

Volcán Tacaná (about 4,060 m; Wikidata records 4,064 m) is an active stratovolcano rising right on the border of Guatemala (San Marcos Department) and Mexico (Chiapas state). It is the highest point of Chiapas and the second-highest volcano in Central America after Tajumulco. In the Mam language its name is often read as "house of fire." Its summit and slopes fall within the Tacaná Biosphere Reserve, protecting biodiverse cloud forest. Its strongest volcanic activity occurred roughly 2,000 years ago; the last recorded event was a small phreatic (steam) eruption in May 1986, and fumaroles persist. The climb is non-technical but long: from the Mexican side it usually goes via Unión Juárez through coffee plantations and cloud forest to the summit (about 10 hours), while the Guatemalan route sets out from the Sibinal/Talquián area. The top offers sweeping views across the Sierra Madre to the Pacific.

Routes

Ruta Guatemala — Sibinal / Talquián

Menengah (trailhead terpencil)
1–2 hari
