Description
Volcán San Pedro (~3,020 m) is a dormant stratovolcano rising over the southwestern shore of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala's Sololá Department, and the smallest of the three iconic volcanoes ringing the caldera lake (with Atitlán and Tolimán). It is a popular day hike of about 8 km out-and-back, starting from a visitor centre above the town of San Pedro La Laguna: the trail climbs through coffee and maize plots and then into lush cloud forest, reaching the summit in roughly 3–4 hours. From the top—and from viewpoints on its flanks—hikers get sweeping panoramas over the whole of Lake Atitlán and the cones of Tolimán and Atitlán opposite. Being steep and humid, the path can be slippery; the dry season (November–April) offers the best chance of clear skies.
