Description
Volcán Puracé (about 4,650 m) is an active andesitic stratovolcano in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, inside Puracé National Natural Park in the Cauca Department. It is the youngest and northernmost volcano of the Los Coconucos volcanic chain—a line of roughly 15 eruptive centres—and ranks among Colombia's most active volcanoes, with about a dozen eruptions in the 20th century and a renewed eruption in January 2025. Its name derives from a Quechua term often rendered as 'mountain of fire,' and the summit is a truncated cone with concentric craters and an active fumarole field. The ascent is one of Colombia's best-known high-mountain day hikes: from around Pilimbalá/Crucero La Mina, hikers cross a páramo ecosystem full of endemic frailejones (Espeletia) before the terrain turns to sand and andesitic slabs near the crater rim. Because the volcano is active and sits on Indigenous land, access is co-managed by the national park and the Kokonuko community and can close on short notice when the volcanic alert level rises.

Routes
Sendero Volcán Puracé (jalur harian ke kawah)
Menengah (non-teknis; ketinggian & cuaca páramo jadi faktor utama)The main and most popular route. From around Pilimbalá/Crucero La Mina (the old military base area), hikers cross a frailejón-filled páramo ecosystem before the terrain turns to sand and andesitic slabs up to the crater rim (about 4,646 m). A local guide and Indigenous-community permission are usually required, and the trail can close when the volcanic alert level rises.
Travesía Puracé + Serranía de los Coconucos (multi-hari)
Menengah–berat (trek punggungan vulkanik)A longer traverse following the string of Los Coconucos eruptive centres along the volcanic ridge, reaching points up to roughly 4,700 m. Suited to those wanting a deeper immersion in the páramo landscape and the region's volcanic geology; it requires acclimatisation, camping supplies, and a guide.
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Volcán Puracé is typically a full-day trip from the city of Popayán: an early start to the park entrance around Pilimbalá/Crucero La Mina, breakfast, then a crossing of the rain-soaked páramo full of frailejones (Espeletia) before the terrain turns to sand and dark andesitic slabs near the crater (about 4,646 m). Trip reports stress the cold, foggy páramo air, the sulphur smell from fumaroles, the need for a local guide and Indigenous-community permission, and possible trail closures when the volcanic alert level rises. The videos below capture the ascent from the mountain's foot to the crater rim.
