Description
Volcán Poás (2,708 m) in Costa Rica's Cordillera Central is one of the country's most-visited volcanoes and the centrepiece of Poás Volcano National Park. Its draw is the active main crater, roughly 1.3–1.7 km across—one of the largest active craters on Earth—holding a blue-green acid crater lake and restless fumaroles. Access is remarkably easy: a short (~600 m) paved path from the visitor centre to the viewing platform makes it suitable for all ages and even wheelchair-accessible. A separate branch winds through cloud forest to Laguna Botos, a cold lake in a long-dormant crater. Because the park sits in a cloud forest, the crater view is often lost to fog by late morning, so the first morning slot offers the best chance. Visits now require a timed online reservation through SINAC and come with a safety helmet, gas shelters and SO₂ monitors. Poás erupted significantly in April 2017, closing the park; it reopened in 2018 after safety systems were installed, and renewed activity in 2024–2025 again triggered temporary closures.

Routes
Sendero Laguna Botos (jalur Danau Botos)
Climbing Experiences
A visit to Volcán Poás centres on the short paved trail from the visitor centre to the viewing platform over the active main crater with its acid lake, plus an optional branch to Laguna Botos in the cloud forest. Visitor accounts stress the timed SINAC reservation, the safety helmets handed out, the short time cap at the platform, and arriving early before the crater clouds over. The videos below include practical guides, a guided walk to the crater lake, and both English and Spanish experiences.
