Description

Volcán Maderas (1,394 m) is one of the two volcanoes that form Isla de Ometepe, the figure-eight island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. Unlike its still-active twin Concepción, Maderas has long been dormant and its slopes hold one of the few cloud forests on Nicaragua's Pacific side. The trail climbs through coffee plots, dry forest and then humid, muddy cloud forest—alive with howler and white-faced monkeys and blue morpho butterflies. The summit cradles a crater lagoon (Laguna de Maderas) reached by an extra steep descent. Prehistoric petroglyphs found on the flanks attest to the island's ancient cultures. Because the terrain is muddy and slick, the 6–9 hour hike requires a guide.

Routes

El Porvenir (Balgüe) — Jalur Alternatif

Sedang–Berat (berlumpur, wajib pemandu)
+1250 m 1 hari (7–9 jam pulang-pergi)

An alternative start from the Balgüe/El Porvenir side that joins the main trail higher on the slope. The terrain is similar—plots, dry forest, then muddy cloud forest to the crater—and likewise requires a licensed guide. It suits those staying on the island's southeast side. The dry season (December–April) keeps the trail comparatively drier and safer.

Finca Magdalena ke Puncak & Laguna Kawah

Sedang–Berat (berlumpur, curam, wajib pemandu)
+1250 m 1 hari (6–9 jam pulang-pergi)

The most common route, starting at Finca Magdalena on the northern flank. It climbs through coffee plots and dry forest, then enters humid, very muddy cloud forest with steep pitches sometimes climbed on roots. After reaching the crater rim, hikers can descend steeply to Laguna de Maderas on the crater floor. A local guide is mandatory; bring boots, rain gear and gloves.

Climbing Experiences

Volcán Maderas (1,394 m) on Isla de Ometepe is a 6–9 hour round trip with a mandatory guide, climbing through muddy cloud forest to a crater lagoon at the top. Hikers highlight the slick mud and steep pitches, howler monkeys in the canopy, thick fog, and the still lagoon inside the crater as the payoff.
