Description
Volcán Lonquimay (2,865 m) is a near-perfectly conical stratovolcano in Chile's Araucanía Region, inside the Malalcahuello-Nalcas National Reserve. It is famous for the 'Navidad' eruption that began on Christmas Eve of December 1988 and lasted into 1990, building a new scoria cone (Cono Navidad) on its northeast flank. Its southern slopes host the Corralco ski resort, which is also the most popular trailhead for the ascent. The normal route from the ski centre follows the southeast ridge and snow slopes to the summit in roughly 4–5 hours; gradients can reach about 40%, so crampons and an ice axe are commonly needed higher up. From the crater rim the panorama takes in neighbouring peaks such as Tolhuaca, Sierra Nevada and Llaima. Because the volcano is active, climbers must watch weather, hard snow and volcanic conditions.

Routes
Directa Ladera Sur (lereng selatan langsung)
Climbing Experiences
Climbing Volcán Lonquimay usually starts from the Corralco ski centre on the southern flank, following the southeast ridge and snow slopes to the crater rim in about 4–5 hours. Trip reports highlight the volcano's symmetrical cone, the need for crampons and an ice axe higher up, wind and hard snow, and the panorama of Araucanía's peaks from the top. The videos below document ascents via Ruta 5/Corralco and weekend expeditions from Santiago.
