Description
Volcán El Reventador (~3,562 m) is an active andesitic stratovolcano on the eastern foothills of the Ecuadorian Andes, about 100 km east of Quito, within the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve toward the Amazon lowlands. Its hallmark is a horseshoe-shaped caldera ~4 km wide open to the east, holding a young, unvegetated cone that rises about 1,300 m from the caldera floor — the seat of current activity. Since the major eruption of November 2002 that dusted ash as far as Quito, it has erupted almost continuously. Ascents begin from the E45 Quito–Lago Agrio highway, pushing through dense rainforest to a camp at the base of the caldera wall, then crossing old lava fields and climbing loose scoria to the active cone — a hard, remote, guided undertaking. Because eruptions are ongoing, reaching the active summit is high-risk and often prohibited; many parties only reach the lava flows on the flanks. The name 'El Reventador' means 'The Exploder'.

Non-teknis tetapi berat & terpencil; WAJIB pemanduPendakian dimulai dari jalan raya E45 Quito–Lago Agrio, menembus hutan hujan lebat kaki Amazon menuju kamp di dasar dinding kaldera (kaldera selebar ±4 km terbuka ke timur). Dari sana pendaki menyeberangi ladang lava tua sisa erupsi 2002 lalu memanjat skoria dan abu gembur di kerucut aktif setinggi ±1.300 m di dalam kaldera. Karena letusan berlangsung terus-menerus, pendakian ke puncak aktif berisiko tinggi dan sering dilarang—banyak rombongan hanya sampai aliran lava di lereng.
