Description

Volcán de San Miguel, widely known as Chaparrastique, is an active, symmetrical stratovolcano in eastern El Salvador, about 15 km southwest of the city of San Miguel. Standing ≈ 2,130 m, it is one of El Salvador’s most active volcanoes — a minor eruption occurred in 2002 and a more notable ash eruption on 29 December 2013 prompted evacuations. For local hikers, Chaparrastique is a demanding day hike: the route climbs through coffee slopes and scrub into open volcanic sand, then a steep pull to the crater rim with sweeping views over the San Miguel plain and the Pacific. Because it is active, ascents should follow MARN/Civil Protection monitoring.
