Description
Volcán Chiles (4,723 m) is a stratovolcano straddling the Colombia–Ecuador border in the Nudo de los Pastos — the Nariño (Chiles/Cumbal) side in Colombia and the Carchi (Tufiño) side in Ecuador — about 20 km northwest of Tulcán. It is part of the Chiles–Cerro Negro volcanic complex, which has produced earthquake swarms since 2013 and is jointly monitored by IG-EPN (Ecuador) and SGC/OVS-Pasto (Colombia). Its flanks are páramo dotted with frailejones, and its glaciers disappeared long ago, leaving only snow patches. The climb is usually made from Tufiño: the paved road ends near the Aguas Hediondas turnoff, a dirt track reaches an antenna station, then about 5 km of walking leads to the summit — often finished with a soak in the Aguas Hediondas hot springs.
