Description
Cerro Negro (728 m) is the youngest volcano in Central America, born in 1850 in the Maribios chain near León, Nicaragua. Its jet-black, almost barren cinder cone has made it world-famous as the birthplace of 'volcano boarding' — sliding down the volcanic gravel on a wooden board. The hike to the crater rim takes only about an hour but is steep and exposed; from the top hikers look out over the Maribios cones, the city of León, and the Pacific before riding back down the slope.
