Description
Volcán Antuco (2,969 m) is a young, active stratovolcano in Chile's Biobío Region, rising on the shore of Laguna del Laja beside the Sierra Velluda massif. Its last major eruptions date to the 19th century, and its cone of lava and scoria makes it a popular objective for both climbing and ski-mountaineering within Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja. The normal route starts on the north-west side near a small ski area, ascending a broad sand/scoria shoulder and then snow slopes to the summit—relatively short but demanding, packing a steep elevation gain into a short distance. In the snow season climbers need crampons and an ice axe, and everyone must register at the CONAF guardhouse before ascending. The summit offers a panorama of the blue lake, the snow-capped Sierra Velluda, and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

F/PD — salju ringan, crampon & ice axe di musim bersaljuThe standard Antuco route starts from the ski-centre parking lot on the north-west side, climbing a broad scoria/sand shoulder then snow slopes to the summit. Crampons and an ice axe are needed in the snow season; registration at the CONAF guardhouse is mandatory.

Ski-mountaineering, kemiringan sedang di bagian puncakA ski-mountaineering variant climbing Antuco from the base of the small ski area on the north-west side, using the lift when running, then skinning to the shoulder and summit with several ski-descent options. Optimal from winter to early spring.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Volcán Antuco (2,969 m) is a popular day climb in Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja, Chile—its normal route ascends a scoria shoulder then snow slopes from the north-west side near a small ski area. Climbers' reports stress the steep elevation gain over a short distance, the sharp contrast between summer (tiring dry sand/scoria) and winter (snow, wind, crampons and ice axe required), and the mandatory registration at the CONAF guardhouse. Antuco is also a ski-mountaineering objective when snow-covered, with panoramas of Laguna del Laja and the Sierra Velluda from the top.
