Description
Volcán Acotango (6,052 m) is the highest peak of the Nevados de Quimsachata volcanic complex on the Bolivia–Chile border, among Altiplano giants such as Sajama, Parinacota and Pomerape. It is widely known as one of the most accessible 6,000-metre peaks in the Andes: an old mining track lets 4WD vehicles reach around 5,550–5,660 m, so the remaining ascent to the summit takes only about 3–5 hours of walking over scree and snowfields with no technical climbing. Because of this easy access and its altitude, Acotango is very popular as an acclimatisation peak before attempting Sajama (6,542 m), Bolivia's high point. Even so, the extreme altitude and harsh Altiplano weather still demand gradual acclimatisation and careful preparation.

Routes
Pendekatan sisi Chili — via Taman Nasional Lauca
Non-teknis namun ketinggian >6.000 mAn alternative approach from the Chilean side through Lauca National Park, using the same high vehicle track on the Nevados de Quimsachata complex. The character of the climb is similar to the Bolivian side — a non-technical route over scree and snow to the summit — with altitude, cold and Altiplano wind remaining the main challenges.
SourceRute Normal sisi Bolivia — via desa Sajama (Taman Nasional Sajama)
Non-teknis (Kelas 1–2); scree & bidang salju, tanpa pemanjatan beratThe most popular route uses an old mining track so that a 4WD can drive up to about 5,550–5,660 m. From there climbers walk roughly 3–5 hours over scree and snowfields to the 6,052 m summit — with no technical climbing. The base is usually the village of Sajama (Sajama National Park, Bolivia), and Acotango is often used as an acclimatisation peak before attempting Sajama.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbers' experiences on Acotango almost uniformly describe it as the 'easiest 6,000er': a 4WD drives up to around 5,550–5,660 m, then it is just a few hours of walking on scree and snow to the 6,052 m summit with no technical climbing. Many vlogs use it as an acclimatisation stepping-stone before Sajama. Even so, climbers still stress the importance of acclimatisation, extreme cold and Altiplano wind.
