Description

Victoria Peak, 1,120 metres high, is Belize's second-highest summit — only about four metres lower than Doyle's Delight — rising in the Maya Mountains of Stann Creek District inside the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Its sharp profile makes it one of the country's best-known natural landmarks; since 1998 the summit area has been protected as a natural monument adjoining the Sittee River Wildlife Reserve and other protected areas. The climb is regarded as Belize's toughest trek: the round trip normally takes three days and two nights through rainforest, covering roughly 50-plus kilometres with close to 3,000 metres of cumulative ascent, river crossings and a steep, partly rope-assisted scramble to the top. Access is tightly managed: visitors must book through the Belize Audubon Society, hire a specially certified guide, and only one group may camp on the trail at a time, so only a few hundred people complete it each year. Cockscomb Basin itself is a roughly 400-square-kilometre sanctuary on the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains, famous as a jaguar reserve.

The only route to Victoria Peak leaves from Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and returns the same way, normally over three days and two nights, covering some fifty-plus kilometres with close to 3,000 metres of cumulative ascent. Two trail camps are used, and only one group may camp at a time. The final push to the summit is very steep and partly rope- and harness-assisted. Booking must go through the Belize Audubon Society, and groups must be accompanied by a specially certified guide.

For visitors not joining the summit expedition, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary has a network of short marked trails on the valley floor — past rivers, waterfalls and jaguar-reserve forest — that take a few hours. They also serve to acclimatise to the heat and humidity before attempting Victoria Peak.
