Description

Vesuvius (1,281 m) is a stratovolcano rising on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Naples, Italy — best known for its 79 AD eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The only active volcano on the European mainland and one of the world's most closely monitored, Vesuvius is a hugely popular day-hike destination in Campania: the trail from the car park to the crater rim is easy to moderate (30–45 minutes), crossing black volcanic gravel with sweeping views of the Gulf of Naples. It last erupted in 1944 and is continuously tracked by the Osservatorio Vesuviano within the Vesuvius National Park.

Routes

Jalur Kawah Standar — Parkir Quota 1000 → Tepi Kawah

Mudah–menengah (non-teknis; tanjakan curam di awal, kerikil & abu vulkanik, tanpa naungan)
±1–2 jam pulang-pergi (30–45 menit naik, 20–30 menit turun)

The only official route to the crater authorised by park management, starting from the car park around 1,000 m elevation (reached by Circumvesuviana train + shuttle bus, Vesuvio Express, or private car). The roughly 860 m trail climbs black volcanic gravel and ash — steep at the start then easing toward the crater rim. At the rim, visitors can walk part of the circular path to view fumaroles and the ~200 m deep crater floor. No vegetation on the upper trail; closed shoes with a firm sole, water, and sunscreen are essential.

Climbing Experiences

The Vesuvius hike typically starts from the car park around 1,000 m (reached by bus, the 'Vesuvio Express' shuttle, or private car), then follows an 860 m trail to the crater rim in 30–45 minutes across black volcanic gravel and ash. There is no shade at all, so water and a hat are essential — especially in summer. Sturdy closed shoes with a good grip are a must because the volcanic gravel is slippery. Hikers describe the surreal experience of standing on the rim of an active volcano, watching sulphur fumes rise from cracks, and gazing out over the Gulf of Naples with its islands in the distance.
