Description

Veleta (3,396 m) is the second-highest peak in the Sierra Nevada and in the Iberian Peninsula after Mulhacén, and among the highest in all of Spain. Rising in Granada province, Andalusia, within Sierra Nevada National Park, its rocky ridge overlooking a glacial cirque makes it one of the most popular and accessible three-thousander hikes in Spain. The usual start is Hoya de la Mora (about 2,500 m), the highest point reachable by private car; from there hikers follow a trail — often cutting across the switchbacks of the old paved road — past the Virgen de las Nieves monument, with roughly 900 m of ascent over about 11 km and a 2–3 hour climb. The route has no technical difficulty but is highly exposed with no shade. From the summit on a clear day there is a 360-degree panorama: the Sierra Nevada ranges, the city of Granada, the Mediterranean, and even the coast of Africa. Many hikers combine it with Mulhacén in a single traverse.

Routes

Traverse Veleta–Mulhacén

Menengah — jalur ketinggian panjang antara dua puncak tertinggi Iberia

±2–3 jam naik (±5 jam PP); naik ±900 m sepanjang ±11 km

Rute paling populer ke puncak Veleta. Dari Hoya de la Mora (±2.500 m, titik tertinggi yang dijangkau mobil), pendaki menyusuri jalur yang kerap memotong tikungan jalan aspal tua, melewati monumen Virgen de las Nieves, lalu menanjak stabil ke puncak 3.396 m. Tanpa kesulitan teknis namun tanpa naungan sama sekali—paparan matahari dan angin menuntut persiapan air dan lapisan pakaian.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Veleta are mostly a day ascent from Hoya de la Mora to the 3,396 m summit, often paired with Mulhacén. Videos show the open, shadeless trail, the Virgen de las Nieves monument, the rocky ridge, and sweeping panoramas to Granada, the Mediterranean and Africa. There is variety in how people reach the top — winter snow climbs, summer treks, and cycling up what is billed as Europe's highest paved road. Much of the footage is Spanish, by local guides and hikers, underlining Veleta's popularity as Spain's most accessible three-thousander.
