Description

Vârful Peleaga (2,509 m) is the highest peak of the Retezat Mountains in the Southern Carpathians of Romania and the high point of Retezat National Park — Romania's first national park. The area is famed for its glacial scenery: dozens of glacial lakes, including Bucura, the largest glacial lake in Romania, set in the saddle between Peleaga and neighbouring summits. Reaching Peleaga is a waymarked high-mountain trek rather than a technical climb: hikers typically start from Cabana Pietrele past the Pietrele and Tăul Porții lakes, or from Poiana Pelegii via Lake Bucura. Retezat is also home to chamois, marmots, and endemic flora, so the route blends real physical effort with rich, wild mountain views.

Routes

Cabana Pietrele → Tăul Porții → Vârful Peleaga

Trek gunung tinggi bertanda; sedang, tanpa bagian teknis
±7–9 jam pulang-pergi (trek harian panjang)

The classic route from Cabana Pietrele climbs past a chain of glacial lakes (Lacul Pietrele, Tăul Porții) to the ridge, then follows waymarked trail to the summit of Peleaga. Long and rocky in its upper part, but with no technical climbing. It pairs well with nearby Lake Bucura.

Poiana Pelegii → Lacul Bucura → Vârful Peleaga

Trek gunung tinggi bertanda; sedang
±6–8 jam pulang-pergi

An alternative from Poiana Pelegii passing Lake Bucura — the largest glacial lake in Romania — before climbing to the saddle and the summit of Peleaga. It is often used by hikers camping in the Bucura area as a base for the highest Retezat peaks.
