Description

Vârful Omu is the highest summit of the Bucegi Mountains in Romania’s Southern Carpathians, with Cabana Omu and a weather station near the top. Elevation figures differ between references: 2,505 m is commonly used for the hut area, SummitPost lists 2,507 m, and Wikidata records 2,514 m for the peak; these are not presented as one uniform measurement. The ascent from Bușteni through Valea Cerbului is long, while starting at Babele reduces the climb. The easier Babele approach still has narrow, rocky sections and limited natural water supplies. Conditions can turn from sunshine to cold cloud during a walk; winter routes require a separate assessment from summer hiking.

From Cabana Babele, follow the yellow stripe towards Omu. The trip account estimates 2.5 hours one way, with several climbs and the narrow Cerdacul Obârșiei passage. Carry water and weather protection. Allow separately for access from Piatra Arsă or by cable car.

From Cabana Mălăiești, the route crosses the glacial valley, climbs Hornul Mare and continues through Șaua Hornurilor to Omu. Hikingbeast’s winter account highlights avalanches, ice and cornices above the chimney. Alpine experience and competent crampon and ice-axe use are needed; check with Salvamont or hut staff rather than assuming the route is always safe or open.
