Description

Vârful Omu (Omu Peak, ~2,505 m) is the highest point of the Bucegi Mountains and one of the best-known summits of the Southern Carpathians in Romania. Its top is a broad, bare rocky plateau crowned by a boulder several metres high, which is why sources quote elevations ranging from 2,505 to 2,514 m. The summit carries a weather station and Cabana Omu — the highest mountain shelter in the entire Carpathians, first built in 1888 on the initiative of the Transylvanian Carpathian Society (SKV). The Bucegi are formed of sedimentary rock (conglomerate and limestone), so the peak is non-volcanic, and the massif is famous for the Babele rock formations and the 'Sfinxul' (Sphinx) near the trails. The classic route from the town of Bușteni follows Valea Cerbului and climbs a steep glacial cirque; an easier option uses the cable car up to the Bucegi plateau, then walks via Cabana Babele to the summit.

Routes

Bușteni → Valea Cerbului → Vârful Omu (jalur klasik)

Menengah–berat; jalur bertanda tanpa pemanjatan teknis, tetapi tanjakan panjang >1.500 m dan bagian akhir menembus sirkus glasial dengan scree lepas & undakan batu
±6–8 jam naik (pulang-pergi sehari penuh, umumnya lewat Babele/Jepii Mici turun)

The most classic ascent from the town of Bușteni. It follows Valea Cerbului (the Stag Valley) through forest, then climbs steeply up a rocky glacial cirque to the summit plateau where Cabana Omu stands. Strenuous because of the large elevation gain, but it needs no climbing gear.

Cabana Mălăiești → Valea Mălăieștilor → Hornul Mare → Vârful Omu (rute musim dingin)

Berat, terutama musim dingin; menembus lembah glasial dan cerobong batu Hornul Mare — butuh pengalaman & perlengkapan alpine di musim salju
±5–7 jam naik dari Cabana Mălăiești

A northern-side route via Cabana Mălăiești, following the Mălăiești glacial valley and climbing the Hornul Mare rock chimney. It is one of the lines still used in winter, but it is hazardous from avalanches and ice and demands alpine experience and equipment.

Telecabina Bușteni → Platoul Bucegi → Babele → Vârful Omu (jalur ringan)

Mudah–menengah; jalur dataran tinggi bertanda, tanjakan sedang menjelang puncak
±3–4 jam jalan kaki dari stasiun atas kereta gantung ke puncak (satu arah)

The easiest option: take the cable car (telecabina) from Bușteni up to the Bucegi plateau, then walk past the Babele rock formations and the 'Sfinxul' (Sphinx) to Cabana Babele, continuing along the plateau ridge to Vârful Omu. Ideal for hikers who want to avoid the big climb from the valley.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Vârful Omu (~2,505 m) is generally a full-day trek rather than a technical climb. The classic route starts from the town of Bușteni, follows Valea Cerbului (the Stag Valley) and then works up a steep glacial cirque of loose scree to the summit plateau where Cabana Omu stands. A far easier option uses the Bușteni cable car up to the Bucegi plateau, then strolls past the Babele rock formations and the 'Sfinxul' (Sphinx) to Cabana Babele and on to the top. Hikers stress fitness, an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, and caution against fog and strong wind on the exposed summit plateau.
