Description
The Usambara Mountains of northeastern Tanzania are one of the northern blocks of the Eastern Arc Mountains — an ancient chain of fault-block ranges stretching about 90 km long and 30–50 km wide between Moshi and Tanga. They split into the higher West Usambara and the smaller, wetter, coast-facing East Usambara, with the highest point, Chambolo peak, at roughly 2,289 m. The range was raised by faulting from Precambrian metamorphic rock (gneisses, pyroxenes, amphiboles) rather than volcanism. Because it was never glaciated and enjoys a stable humid climate, Usambara preserves ancient cloud forests with exceptional endemism — sometimes called the “Galápagos of Africa” — and is the wild origin of the African violet (Saintpaulia), plus endemic birds such as the Usambara akalat and Usambara weaver. Lushoto, a former German colonial hill station (once “Wilhelmsthal”), is the main gateway to the West Usambaras, with the cliff-edge Irente Viewpoint (~1,500 m) as the most popular short hike. The signature hiking draw is the village-to-village trek from Lushoto to Mtae or Mambo (3–4 days, ~80 km), staying in village guesthouses so no camping gear is needed.
