Description
Unter Kapas is a low hill in Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, in the eastern part of Sumbawa island roughly 41 km southeast of Sumbawa Besar and only about 5 km from the shore of Saleh Bay. Its elevation is modest and the figures disagree between sources: the GeoNames toponym database records 62 m, while the Copernicus digital elevation model gives around 53 m. The nearest settlement is Brang Kolong village (Plampang district), less than 1 km from the summit point, though village boundaries are unmapped so the exact district cannot be confirmed — some references point instead to neighbouring Labuhan Sangoro in Maronge district. The most interesting thing about the hill is its name. "Unter" is not a proper name but a generic Samawa (Sumbawa) word for hill, parallel to "Olat/Olet", which also means hill, as in Olet Sangenges. The pattern is obvious on the map: eastern Sumbawa holds dozens of named summits beginning with "Unter" or "Olat". So "Unter Kapas" means roughly "Kapas Hill"; the meaning of the element "kapas" itself was not found in any source and is deliberately not guessed at here. The surroundings are farmland under the seasonally dry climate typical of West Nusa Tenggara — about 1,500 mm of rain a year, almost all of it falling between November and April. DATA LIMITATIONS: every web trace of the name "Unter Kapas" derives from a single dataset, the NGA GNS toponym database (modified 2010), imported into OpenStreetMap and mirrored by GeoNames. No news item, climbing account, village document or summit photograph could be verified. The explanation of "unter" rests on a local toponymy blog rather than an academic dictionary — the relevant Samawa dictionaries are not publicly accessible.
