Description
Uncompahgre Peak is the highest summit of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, within the Uncompahgre Wilderness near Lake City. Wikidata lists 4,361 m; survey data summarized by Wikipedia gives 4,363.5 m, so published elevations differ. A steep northern cliff borders its summit plateau. The rock has volcanic origins, but the mountain is not a volcano. The standard Nellie Creek trail crosses an alpine basin to the south ridge, followed by loose rock below the summit. Reaching the upper trailhead requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle.

Routes
Rute Standar — via Nellie Creek Trailhead (Punggung Selatan)
Kelas 2From the 4WD trailhead, cross the basin to the south ridge, then turn onto the west side for loose-rock climbing. Distance and gain are rounded conversions of 14ers.com’s 7.5 miles round-trip and 3,000 feet; starting at 2WD parking substantially extends the outing.
SourceVia Matterhorn Creek Trailhead
This alternative links the Matterhorn Creek approach with Uncompahgre’s standard trail across alpine meadows. Hikers in the 14ers.com discussion describe a longer outing with rewarding basin views. Distance depends on parking and summit choices; reports that also include Wetterhorn are not equivalent to climbing Uncompahgre alone.
SourceClimbing Experiences
This collection pairs five Uncompahgre videos with a Just Hiking account from August 12, 2005. In the video description, The Dreamologist recounts walking from around a Nellie Creek crossing after seeing other vehicles struggle. Just Hiking describes waiting for improving weather and climbing with companions. These accounts show how road access and weather shape the outing; individual hiking times are not universal benchmarks.
