Description
Uncompahgre Peak (4,361 m / 14,309 ft) is the highest summit in the San Juan Mountains and the sixth-highest fourteener in Colorado. Its distinctive cliff-crowned western face is in fact the eroded remnant of ancient volcanism, rising grandly above the Uncompahgre Wilderness. Despite its height, the standard route is one of the easier fourteeners (Class 2): from the Nellie Creek Trailhead — reached by a 4x4 road — hikers cross broad alpine tundra toward the south ridge, then climb a steep rocky final pitch to the summit plateau. The top offers a 360-degree panorama of the San Juans, including neighbouring Wetterhorn Peak, which is often combined into the same trip.

Routes
Rute Standar — via Nellie Creek Trailhead (Punggung Selatan)
Kelas 2 (satu ruas berbatu curam menjelang puncak)The main and most popular route up Uncompahgre Peak. From the Nellie Creek Trailhead (~3,480 m, reached by a 4x4 road off Henson Creek Road near Lake City), the trail crosses forest and broad alpine tundra toward the mountain's south ridge, then climbs a steep rocky final pitch to the 4,361 m summit plateau. It is one of the easier high fourteeners, yet still demanding because of altitude and afternoon thunderstorms.
SourceVia Matterhorn Creek Trailhead (kombinasi dengan Wetterhorn Peak)
Kelas 2 (Uncompahgre) — Wetterhorn Kelas 3An alternative approach from the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead that lets climbers combine Uncompahgre with nearby Wetterhorn Peak (4,272 m, Class 3) in one long outing. It connects to Uncompahgre's standard route via a link trail across the high basins of the Uncompahgre Wilderness.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Many hikers call Uncompahgre one of the friendliest of the higher fourteeners: the trail from the Nellie Creek Trailhead is long but clear, crossing broad alpine tundra with only one steep rocky pitch before the summit plateau. The 360-degree San Juan views and the option to pair it with Wetterhorn are the main draws.
