Information
- Elevation
- 2.630 m
- Country
- Tanzania (TZ)
- Location / Range
- Busur Timur (Eastern Arc Mountains), Wilayah Morogoro, Tanzania timur — inti kawasan lindung = Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve (~24.115 ha) di atas kota Morogoro
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- -7.1667, 37.6667
- Difficulty
- Best Season
- Musim kemarau Juni–Oktober paling nyaman; pada musim hujan jalur menjadi sangat licin dan puncak sering tertutup awan/hujan sehingga panorama hilang.
- Permits & Rules
- Pendakian umumnya memakai pemandu lokal yang direkrut dari Morogoro (trailhead Rock Garden / Morningside); air terjun Choma dikenai retribusi masuk sekitar 10.000 TZS. Sebagian jalur melintasi Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve (dikelola Tanzania Forest Services).
- Hazards
- Lereng hutan curam dan licin (terutama basah), kelembapan tinggi dan cepat lelah, kabut/hujan yang menutup jalur, serta risiko tersesat di percabangan jalur ladang-hutan sehingga pemandu sangat dianjurkan.
Description
The Uluguru Mountains are an ancient block-fault range of Tanzania's Eastern Arc, rising directly above the town of Morogoro about 200 km west of Dar es Salaam. Unlike volcanic Kilimanjaro or Meru, the Ulugurus are built of uplifted, deeply eroded crystalline rock and hold one of Africa's oldest and richest submontane and montane rainforests. The area is part of a global biodiversity hotspot: the roughly 24,115-ha Uluguru Nature Forest Reserve shelters more than a dozen endemic vertebrates and over a hundred endemic plants (African violets, orchids), and is an Important Bird Area home to the endemic Uluguru bush-shrike. Its highest point, Kimhandu, reaches about 2,633 m, but the peaks most often hiked in a day are Lupanga (~2,138 m) and Bondwa (~2,170 m), climbed straight from Morogoro through the Morningside area — a former German colonial settlement — past the Choma Waterfalls. The trails are steep, humid and slippery, offering an intense montane-forest experience with sweeping views over the Morogoro valley when the weather is clear.

Routes
Air Terjun Choma & Morningside (jalur pengantar)
Mudah–SedangA walk from the Rock Garden trailhead along a wide dirt road to the Choma Waterfalls, then up to Morningside — a former German colonial settlement often used as an overnight base before continuing to Bondwa or Lupanga.
SourcePuncak Bondwa via Morningside
SedangThe most popular half-day hike: from the Morningside area through forest, farmland and villages up to Bondwa Peak (~2,170 m) with its antenna station and views over the Morogoro valley, usually combined with a stop at the Choma Waterfalls.
SourcePuncak Lupanga dari Morogoro
BeratA demanding full-day climb to Lupanga (~2,138 m), the peak rising directly above Morogoro; the trail is very steep, humid and slippery with sections needing handholds, and the summit is often shrouded in cloud or rain so views are not guaranteed. A local guide is strongly recommended.

Accounts of hiking the Ulugurus centre on two day-peaks above Morogoro town — Bondwa and Lupanga — climbed from the Morningside area past the Choma Waterfalls. Videos and trip reports highlight steep, humid, slippery montane-forest trails, the colonial-era remnants at Morningside, and views over the Morogoro valley when the weather clears.
