Information

Elevation
5.672 m
Country
Peru (PE)
Location / Range
Zona Vulkanik Tengah Andes (Cordillera Occidental), Region Moquegua
Mountain type
Gunung berapi (stratovolcano andesit–dasit aktif)
Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-16.3486, -70.9022
Difficulty
Non-teknis di musim kering (trek scree/pasir ke bibir kawah), tetapi berat karena ketinggian; status aktif membatasi akses saat erupsi
Best Season
April–November (musim kering Andes selatan)
Permits & Rules
Tak ada izin puncak khusus, tetapi akses bergantung pada tingkat kewaspadaan vulkanik (dipantau IGP/INGEMMET). Umumnya lewat operator dari Arequipa; wilayah dapat ditutup saat aktivitas meningkat.
Hazards
Aktivitas vulkanik aktif (letusan freatik, kolom abu, gas), ketinggian di atas 5.000 m (risiko AMS), scree lepas dan angin dingin, serta perubahan cuaca cepat. Selalu cek status vulkanik terkini sebelum mendekat.

Description

Ubinas (5,672 m) is Peru's most active volcano, an andesitic–dacitic stratovolcano in the Moquegua Region about 60 km east of the city of Arequipa. At least 27 explosive eruptions have been recorded since the 16th century — roughly one every 20–33 years — including the largest historical eruption of 1667 and modern episodes in 2006–2007, 2013–2014, and most recently starting in June 2023. Its summit forms a 1.4 km-wide, ~150 m-deep caldera enclosing an ash cone with a funnel-shaped crater. Though dangerous when active, in quiet periods Ubinas draws climbers because the route to the crater rim is relatively non-technical: starting from a base camp around 4,900 m, climbers ascend several hours over sand and scree to the rim. As an active volcano, monitoring by IGP and INGEMMET determines whether the area is safe to approach.

Routes

Jalur Normal 2 Hari — via basecamp sisi timur laut (dari Arequipa)

Sedang / non-teknis di musim kering (berat karena ketinggian)
+772 m 2 hari / 1 malam

The classic operator route from Arequipa: a ~3-hour jeep drive to the mountain, a base camp around 4,900 m on the northeast side, then next day a ~3-hour trek over sand and scree to the crater rim at ~5,444 m before continuing to the 5,672 m high point. Technically easy in the dry season (April–November) but may require crampons and ice axe when snowy; after taking in the crater, descend ~1 hour back to base camp.

Climbing Experiences

Ubinas (5,672 m) in the Moquegua Region is Peru's most active volcano, so any climb of it is shaped by its volcanic status. In quiet periods, climbers drive from Arequipa to a base camp around 4,900 m, then ascend several hours over sand and scree to the rim of the huge caldera to look down on the ash cone inside. The vlogs and operator pages below show that journey — rough roads, cold camps, and views into the active crater — while underlining the need to check the current eruption status before setting out.
