Description
Tymfi (Greek: Τύμφη) is a large mountain massif in Zagori, Epirus, in the heart of the northern Pindus range; its highest peak, Gamila (Γκαμήλα), reaches 2,497 m. Rather than a volcano, Tymfi is a karst limestone massif with dramatic cliffs—including the walls that form the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in the world relative to its width. The area is the core of the Vikos–Aoos National Park and UNESCO Geopark, ringed by the traditional stone villages of Zagori with their arched stone bridges. Its hiking appeal centres on the Drakolimni ('Dragon Lake') of Tymfi, an alpine lake at about 2,000 m inhabited by alpine newts and wrapped in dragon legend—two dragons, at Tymfi's and Smolikas's Dragon Lakes, are said to hurl rocks at each other. The classic base is the Astraka Refuge at around 1,950 m; from there hikers reach the Drakolimni, the Astraka peak and the ridge to Gamila. Treks usually start from the villages of Mikro or Megalo Papigo.

Day one climbs from the village of Mikro/Megalo Papigo (~950 m) in Zagori up a steep rocky path to the Astraka Refuge at about 1,950 m—the overnight base. Day two heads onto the karst plateau, typically visiting the Drakolimni ('Dragon Lake') of Tymfi, then follows the ridge to the Gamila summit with a wide panorama of the Pindus and the Vikos cliffs. There is no technical section in dry conditions, but the distance, altitude, open weather and navigation on the karst plateau demand fitness and care. The Astraka hut is generally open May–October; outside that a tent and full self-reliance are needed.
