Description
Turrialba Volcano (about 3,340 m) is an active stratovolcano in the Cordillera Central of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, standing next to Irazú and forming part of the Central America Volcanic Arc. Its summit holds three craters, and the volcano returned to significant activity from the mid-2010s: a notable eruption in March 2015 (described as the largest activity since 1996), followed by May and September 2016, spread ash across the Central Valley and disrupted air traffic, with further activity recorded up to 2022. Because of this, Turrialba Volcano National Park was closed in 2014 and only reopened on 4 December 2020. When the park is open, visitors can follow guided trails toward crater viewpoints and the 'bosque quemado' (forest killed by volcanic gas). Given its dynamic status, access to the upper reaches depends on OVSICORI monitoring and SINAC decisions—visitors must check current conditions before hiking.

Routes
Sendero Bosque Quemado
Climbing Experiences
Visiting Turrialba Volcano is typically a guided hike inside the national park toward crater viewpoints and the 'bosque quemado'. Visitor reports highlight the barren gas-scarred volcanic landscape, the smell of sulphur, cold misty high-altitude weather, and the importance of checking the park's open status given the volcano's dynamic activity.
