Description
The Tsodilo Hills (Lefelo la Tsodilo) are a cluster of quartzite hills rising abruptly from the Kalahari sand in northwestern Botswana, nicknamed the “Louvre of the Desert” for their 4,500-plus ancient rock paintings made by San peoples. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 for its spiritual significance and its record of human settlement over millennia. It comprises several main hills — Male Hill (the tallest, ~1,400 m, rising about 400 m above the plain), Female Hill and Child Hill. Visitors follow marked trails such as the Rhino, Lion and Cliff trails to reach the rock-art panels and can scramble to the top of Male Hill for sweeping Kalahari views. Local guides are available at the site museum; visits require carrying enough water given the desert heat and remoteness.
Routes
Rhino Trail (loop seni cadas Female Hill)
Mudah–sedangThe most popular and accessible of Tsodilo's four marked trails. Starting near the museum/car park, it circles Female Hill past the best-known rock-art panels (rhino, fertility figures and the Van der Post Panel), with numbered markers at points of interest. Hiking must be done with a local San/Hambukush guide (~BWP120 per person) plus site entry (~BWP50 per person). Carry plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes.
SourceScramble Puncak Male Hill
Menantang (scramble batu curam)The climb to the top of Male Hill, Tsodilo's tallest (given by the source as ~1,489 m, one of Botswana's highest points), rising about 400 m above the surrounding Kalahari bush. It begins on easy 'Lion' ground-level terrain, then becomes a steep, tiring ascent to the summit, rewarded with a sweeping Kalahari Desert panorama. A local guide is required; camping is available on site (~BWP130 per person).
