Description
Tsiafajavona (2,642 m) is the highest peak of the Ankaratra Massif and Madagascar's third-highest mountain, after Maromokotro (Tsaratanàna) and Pic Boby (Imarivolanitra). The Ankaratra Massif is an old volcanic area on the Central Highlands, southwest of the capital Antananarivo, built of trachytic lava domes, cinder cones and maars. Its Malagasy name means roughly 'the one never free of mist' — the summit is almost perpetually shrouded in thick cloud and stays cold year-round. Ascents usually begin from the town of Ambatolampy through the Manjakatompo protected forest, passing remnant primary forest, pine and eucalyptus stands, and steep slopes that climb directly with few switchbacks. The area is ecologically important (home to endemic amphibians) while facing pressure from deforestation.
Routes
Pendakian dari Ambatolampy (via Manjakatompo)
Sedang (jalur menanjak langsung; puncak dingin & berkabut)The main route to the Tsiafajavona summit, starting from the town of Ambatolampy through the Manjakatompo protected forest. The trail climbs past remnant primary forest, pine and eucalyptus stands, then steep slopes to the high point of the Ankaratra. One of Madagascar's most accessible high-altitude destinations; the summit is cold and misty, requiring warm clothing year-round.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Ascents of Tsiafajavona generally start from the town of Ambatolampy through the Manjakatompo protected forest in the Ankaratra Massif. The typically Malagasy trail climbs directly with few switchbacks and is tiring, passing remnant primary forest mixed with pine and eucalyptus. Hikers report cold air and near-constant thick mist at the summit, true to the mountain's name. The area is also popular with flora researchers and students given its relatively short access from Antananarivo.
