- Britania Raya (Wales) (GB)
- Location / Range
- Glyderau, Taman Nasional Eryri (Snowdonia), Gwynedd/Conwy, Wales
- Mountain type
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 53.1149, -3.9975
- Difficulty
Description
Tryfan (917.5 m) is one of the most recognisable peaks in Wales — a jagged rock wall rearing sharply above Llyn Ogwen in the Glyderau range of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. It is famous for being almost impossible to reach without using your hands: its classic route, the North Ridge, is a sustained grade 1 scramble that climbs the rocky crest straight up from the A5 roadside to the summit. On top stand two roughly three-metre monoliths named Adam and Eve (Adda ac Efa); leaping from one to the other is said to earn the 'Freedom of Tryfan', a tradition that carries a real risk of a fatal fall. A slightly less exposed alternative starts from Idwal Cottage/Ogwen past Llyn Idwal and Llyn Bochlwyd, crosses Bwlch Tryfan, then climbs scree to the summit (about 7 km). Because the rock becomes very slippery when wet, Tryfan demands care, dry weather, and scrambling experience.

Routes
SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of Tryfan almost always revolve around scrambling: the sustained grade 1 North Ridge straight from the A5 roadside, with the North Tower section the most exposed. Its summit is synonymous with the Adam & Eve monoliths and the tradition of jumping between them. There is also a slightly less exposed route via Bwlch Tryfan/scree, but Tryfan's rock — slippery when wet — makes every option demand care.
