Description
Cerro Tronador (Argentine summit ~3,470 m; highest international summit ~3,554 m) is an extinct stratovolcano in the northern Patagonian Andes, right on the Argentina–Chile border near Bariloche. Its name, 'the thunderer', comes from the roar of seracs and ice collapsing off its slopes. Rising more than 1,000 m above the surrounding peaks, it holds eight glaciers — including the Ventisquero Negro (Black Glacier), darkened by sediment — and sits inside two national parks: Nahuel Huapi in Argentina and Vicente Pérez Rosales in Chile. For most visitors, Tronador is enjoyed via the trek from Pampa Linda to Refugio Otto Meiling (run by Club Andino Bariloche, ~2,000 m on the ridge between the Castaño Overa and Alerce glaciers) and short walks to the Ventisquero Negro viewpoint. Reaching the true summit is fully alpine: glacier terrain, crevasses and serac-fall danger demand a guide, rope and crampons. Access to Pampa Linda is via a one-way gravel road opened on a timed, alternating schedule.

Routes
Jalan pendek ke mirador Ventisquero Negro (Glasier Hitam)
Mudah (untuk umum)A light option for general visitors: a short walk from near the Pampa Linda ranger post — the first ~3 km nearly flat to the bridge over the Río Castaño Overa — to a viewpoint over the Ventisquero Negro lagoon. The glacier looks dark from the sediment it drags along. Descending to the lake edge or leaving the authorized trail is prohibited. Road access to Pampa Linda is managed on a timed, one-way alternating schedule by the park.
SourceTrek Pampa Linda → Refugio Otto Meiling
Sedang–berat (non-teknis sampai refugio)Tronador's classic trek starts at Pampa Linda and climbs to Refugio Otto Meiling (~2,000 m) on the ridge between the Castaño Overa and Alerce glaciers. The lower two-thirds pass through forest (trail + road, yellow marks); the upper third is a rocky ridge above treeline. Gain is about 1,050 m; roughly 4.5–5 hours up and 3–3.5 hours down. The refuge is run by Club Andino Bariloche and open about November–May; reservations are required. Hiker registration is mandatory before entering the park, and the road to Pampa Linda runs on a timed, one-way alternating schedule.
