Description
Les Trois Mamelles (629 m) is a distinctive three-summited mountain in south-western Mauritius, rising abruptly from surrounding sugar-cane fields on the boundary of the Rivière Noire (Black River) and Plaines Wilhems districts. Its name — French for 'the three breasts' — refers to the resemblance of its three peaks. The mountain is a volcanic erosion remnant: basalt domes and spires left standing after the softer surrounding rock weathered away, leaving a jagged triple-summit silhouette (East, Centre and West Peak). The Centre Peak is the highest. Unlike most of Mauritius' friendly hikes, reaching Trois Mamelles is a genuine scramble: the centre summit is gained by hands-on, Grade II alpine-style scrambling along a narrow, exposed ridge with cliff drops on either side, with even a metal rung fixed in the rock to aid one step. Climbing all three peaks in one outing is a technical undertaking historically done by climbers, sometimes using a rope on the hardest peak. For that reason the mountain is recommended only in dry, clear weather and for experienced hikers comfortable with heights.

Routes
Puncak Tengah (Centre Peak) via Palma
Sulit — scramble bergaya alpin Grade II di arête sempit terpapar; ada pijakan besiThe main hiking route on Trois Mamelles to the highest, central summit. It starts through sugar-cane fields on the Palma side, where the lower path is often overgrown and hard to follow, so careful navigation is needed. The upper section turns into a hands-on scramble along a narrow ridge with drops on both sides; a fixed metal rung helps with one rock step. Fitsy grades it as equivalent to 'Grade II climbing in the Alps'. It is only for fit hikers comfortable with heights, and only when the rock is dry.
SourceTraversée ketiga puncak (East–Centre–West)
Teknis — ranah pemanjat/alpinis; tali kadang dipakai di puncak tersulitTraversing all three peaks of Trois Mamelles (East, Centre and West) in one outing is a technical undertaking historically done by climbers rather than ordinary hikers. The side peaks add serious exposure, and a rope is sometimes used on the hardest peak. Local guides stress that this traverse is only for those experienced in scrambling/mountaineering and must be done in dry weather; the basalt becomes very slippery when wet and the ridge dangerous.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Trois Mamelles (629 m) is known as one of Mauritius' most thrilling and most challenging scrambles. The hike starts through sugar-cane fields on the Palma side, where the lower path is often overgrown and hard to follow, then turns into hands-on rock climbing to the centre summit along a narrow, cliff-exposed ridge. Guide sources agree: it is only for fit hikers comfortable with heights, only in dry conditions, and the centre peak alone is demanding — reaching all three summits is the realm of climbers. Vlogs show the fixed metal rung, the thin ridgeline, and panoramas over the west coast, Le Morne and the Rempart.
