Description
The Tre Cime di Lavaredo (German: Drei Zinnen, 'Three Peaks') are three sheer dolomite-limestone towers rising in the Sexten Dolomites of northern Italy, and the single most iconic symbol of the entire Dolomites region. The three summits — Cima Grande (2,999 m) in the centre, flanked by Cima Ovest (2,973 m) and Cima Piccola (2,857 m) — stand precisely on the border of the provinces of Bolzano-South Tyrol and Belluno; the north faces lie on the South Tyrol side while the southern slopes fall within Veneto. Since the first ascent of Cima Grande on 21 August 1869 by Paul Grohmann with guides Franz Innerkofler and Peter Salcher, the towers have been among the most coveted climbing objectives in the entire Alps. The near-vertical ~500 m north face of Cima Grande produced milestones of alpinism, including the Comici route opened by Emilio Comici with the brothers Angelo and Giuseppe Dimai in 1933. For general hikers, the main draw is the ~10 km loop trail that circles all three towers, passing mountain huts (Rifugio Auronzo, Rifugio Lavaredo, Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte), alpine lakes, and the remnants of World War I trenches and tunnels from the Alpine front. Since 2009 the area has been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage of the Dolomites.

Routes
Panjat Dinding Utara Cima Grande (Via Comici / rute klasik) — hanya pemanjat berpengalaman
Sangat berat (klasik alpine besar; sekitar VI–VII UIAA) — komitmen teknis tinggi, bukan untuk pendaki umumThe near-vertical ~500 m north face of Cima Grande is one of the most legendary rock-climbing arenas in the Alps. The Comici route, opened by Emilio Comici with Angelo and Giuseppe Dimai in 1933, is regarded as one of the great milestones of climbing history and remains a coveted objective for alpinists. Routes here demand high-level multi-pitch experience, management of extreme exposure and rockfall, and careful weather reading. This is NOT a general hiking route — it is listed for historical context and to distinguish the tower faces (for experienced climbers only) from the tourist loop trail below.
SourceRute Lingkar Tre Cime (Giro delle Tre Cime) via Rifugio Auronzo
Sedang — jalur setapak lebar dan bertanda baik; cocok untuk pendaki bugar pemula & keluarga; tanjakan utama pada seksi Rifugio Locatelli menuju Malga LangalmThe classic loop circling all three towers clockwise, starting from Rifugio Auronzo (~2,320 m), reached via a paid toll road from Misurina. From the hut, path no. 101 traverses the southern slopes of the towers to Rifugio Lavaredo and up to the Forcella Lavaredo saddle (~2,454 m) — the point with the most dramatic north-face views. The trail then descends gently on a wide gravel road to Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte (~2,450 m), the iconic photo spot of the three towers with two small lakes in the foreground. The loop closes by descending toward Malga Langalm before climbing back to Rifugio Auronzo. Remnants of World War I trenches and tunnels line the route. Because the average elevation is above 2,300 m and weather changes fast, carry warm layers and rain gear even on clear days, and start early for the best light and to avoid the toll-road quota and crowds.
Route Segments
- 1
Rifugio Auronzo (~2.320 m) → Rifugio Lavaredo (~2.344 m)
Jalur 101 lebar dan hampir datar menyusuri lereng selatan menara; pemanasan ringan dengan pemandangan Cadini di Misurina di belakang
- 2
Rifugio Lavaredo → Forcella Lavaredo (~2.454 m)
Tanjakan pendek ke celah; titik pertama melihat dinding utara ketiga menara secara utuh — sering berangin kencang
- 3
- 4
Rifugio Locatelli → Malga Langalm (~2.285 m) → kembali Rifugio Auronzo
Turun di jalur 105 ke padang Malga Langalm lalu menanjak kembali menutup lingkaran; sisa parit/terowongan Perang Dunia I terlihat di sepanjang bagian akhir
Climbing Experiences
Tre Cime di Lavaredo offers two very different worlds of experience. For most visitors it is the ~10 km loop trail that circles the three towers — completed in ~3.5–5 hours with relatively modest cumulative ascent (~350–450 m), making it suitable for fit beginners and families. The most common starting point is Rifugio Auronzo (~2,320 m), reached via a paid toll road from Misurina; the clockwise route passes Rifugio Lavaredo, the Forcella Lavaredo saddle (~2,454 m) with the most dramatic north-face views, then Rifugio Locatelli/Dreizinnenhütte, the classic viewpoint of all three towers. Many hikers come at sunrise or sunset for golden light on the rock, and some extend it into a multi-day hut-to-hut trek in the Sexten Dolomites. The second world is world-class rock climbing: the north faces of Cima Grande and Cima Ovest are legendary alpine terrain with high-grade routes demanding serious technical experience. Every experience is shaped by fast-changing mountain weather and the World War I history scattered along the trails.
