Description

Topo da Coroa (1,979 m) is the roof of Santo Antão island and Cape Verde's second-highest summit after Pico do Fogo. It is a young volcanic cone grown inside a much older crater; its last major eruption is put at roughly 200,000 years ago, and the summit crater is remarkably well preserved. The mountain rises in the island's arid western end — the exact opposite of the green Paul and Cova valleys where most walkers go. The climb is technically nothing more than walking, but the route is completely unmarked: all you get are branching goat tracks across lunar scoria slopes, which makes a local guide a genuine need rather than a luxury. The crux is not the ascent but water — the whole western massif has essentially no springs and no villages, so every drop must be carried. The usual approach is from the fishing village of Monte Trigo at its foot (about 6 hours round trip), or as one day within the travessia, the multi-day traverse of Santo Antão. The summit, often above the clouds, gives a 360° panorama over most of the island and, on a clear day, neighbouring São Vicente. The area is now a natural park sheltering roughly 61% of Cape Verde's endemic flowering plant species.

The classic route from the fishing village of Monte Trigo, which sits right at the mountain's foot — less than 4 km from the summit, about 20 km west of Porto Novo, reached by 4x4 piste or by boat. The climb crosses arid volcanic slopes, desert-like plateaus and rocky ravines to the summit crater at 1,979 m. No springs, no waymarks, no huts: all water, food, navigation and communication gear must be carried. The summit is windy and cool, and often sits above the cloud layer.

Starts from the mountain village of Norte at sunrise, with about 1,300 m of ascent and the same of descent over roughly 7 hours. The path follows faint, branching goat and sheep tracks across an almost lunar landscape: technically easy but physically hard, and only worth attempting in good weather and visibility. Nights before and after are spent in simple lodgings in Norte. A common alternative start is Ribeira das Patas, graded 'advanced' at 7–9 hours.

The most common way people actually climb Topo da Coroa: slotting it in as the summit day of the travessia, the traverse of Santo Antão. Sleep at Cooperativa, climb at dawn with a light pack, then descend to Monte Trigo — logged at 15 km, about 710 m up and down, and roughly 6 hours. This western part of the island has almost no villages and no water sources between the mountain and the sea, so the whole day's water must be carried from the start. Local operators also sell a guided version of the traverse with Topo de Coroa as its climax.
