Description
Tofua (515 m) is an active stratovolcano forming an island in Tonga's Ha'apai group, roughly 45 km west of the main island Lifuka and over 700 km south-west of Fiji. Its summit is defined by a large caldera about 5 km across, whose walls drop nearly 500 m; the caldera floor holds a cold freshwater lake whose surface sits only about 30 m above sea level. Three post-caldera cones formed after a major eruption approximately 1,000 years ago rise at the northern end of the caldera lake; the largest and most active is the Lofia cone, with a 70 m-wide, 120 m-deep crater that — based on scientific expeditions since 2023 — now holds an active lava lake, one of fewer than ten persistent lava lakes on Earth. Tofua entered world history on 28 April 1789, when the Mutiny on the Bounty occurred roughly 30 nautical miles to its south; Captain William Bligh and 18 loyal crew members landed on Tofua seeking water and supplies, but the islanders turned hostile and killed one crew member, forcing Bligh to sail 6,700 km to Timor in an open longboat — one of the most celebrated feats of survival navigation in maritime history. The island is now uninhabited and protected as Tofua National Park (established 2001). Visits can only be made by chartered boat from Pangai, and the ever-changing volcanic conditions — including maritime hazard notices from Tonga Geological Services in 2024 — make it essential to check current status before setting out.

Routes
Pendakian Tepi Kaldera dan Kerucut Lofia
Sangat berat / Ekspedisi — hanya untuk pendaki berpengalaman; risiko vulkanik aktifFrom the landing point on Tofua's steep, rocky west coast, the route pushes through dense vegetation and trackless lava fields for about 5–6 km to the caldera rim, which drops nearly 500 m into the caldera. The descent into the caldera is steep and requires caution; from the floor it is about 1 km across boggy ground to the Lofia post-caldera cone at the northern end of the caldera lake. The Lofia cone (70 m-wide, 120 m-deep crater) contains an active lava lake that produces smoke, sulphur gas, and occasional lava bomb ejections — approach only with very careful risk assessment. Round-trip total is roughly 10 km with significant elevation change. No marked trail, no facilities, no emergency evacuation. Check Tonga Geological Services volcanic status before departure.
Route Segments
- 1
Pendaratan pantai → Tepi Kaldera
- 3
Lantai Kaldera → Kerucut Lofia
Medan berawa dan blok lava; zona bahaya gas SO₂ — respirator dianjurkan; jangan dekati jika ada lontaran aktif
Climbing Experiences
Reports of visits to Tofua read as extreme expedition stories, not ordinary tourism. Most content comes from scientific expedition teams and professional adventurers who confirmed the existence of an active lava lake in the Lofia cone in 2023–2025 — one of the rarest lava lakes on Earth. Visitors describe a multi-hour boat journey from Pangai, landing on a steep rocky shoreline, pushing through dense vegetation and trackless lava terrain, then standing on the rim of a caldera that drops nearly 500 m to the freshwater lake below, before approaching the pulsing, sulphur-smelling Lofia cone. The Mutiny on the Bounty connection is also a significant historical draw for many visitors.
