Description

The Tofane are a group of three limestone peaks rising above Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Ampezzo Dolomites of northern Italy. Its highest summit, Tofana di Mezzo (3,244 m), is among the loftiest in the Dolomites and can be reached almost to the top by the Freccia nel Cielo cable car from Cortina, making it popular with visitors and climbers alike. The most iconic peak is Tofana di Rozes (3,225 m), whose massive south wall faces the Cinque Torri and was a major stage of the First World War on the Dolomite front — the tunnels and galleries dug by Alpini troops are still traversed by via ferrata climbers today. The best-known aided route, the Via Ferrata Giovanni Lipella, threads a ~500 m wartime tunnel before following a series of ledges and walls to the summit of Tofana di Rozes. Together with Tofana di Dentro (3,238 m), the three peaks make the Tofane one of the most sought-after hiking and via ferrata destinations in the Dolomites, blending outstanding scenery, history and genuine alpine terrain.

Routes

Freccia nel Cielo → Tofana di Mezzo (3.244 m)

Mudah (turis) hingga via ferrata pendek untuk puncak sejati
±beberapa menit dengan kereta gantung + jalan/ferrata pendek ke puncak

The easiest approach to the group's highest summit. The Freccia nel Cielo cable car carries visitors from Cortina d'Ampezzo in three stages up to the Cima Tofana station near 3,244 m. From the top station visitors enjoy Dolomite panoramas; reaching the true summit point of Tofana di Mezzo requires a short walk/via ferrata (e.g. the Aglio ferrata) over exposed terrain. Ideal for those wanting altitude without a long climb, though it remains cold and windy.

Via Ferrata Giovanni Lipella → Tofana di Rozes (3.225 m)

Via ferrata sedang–sulit (seksi tersulit C/D), panjang & terekspos
±3,5–5 jam naik dari Rifugio Dibona

The classic aided route to Tofana di Rozes starting from Rifugio Dibona (2,083 m). Its signature is a ~500 m First World War tunnel (about 120 m of gain) that must be crossed with a torch, followed by a series of ledges, a rock arena and aided walls to the 3,225 m summit. It runs roughly 3.3 km with mostly easy–moderate terrain but a C/D crux. Via ferrata kit, helmet and experience are required; descent is usually via the normal route toward Rifugio Giussani.

Climbing Experiences

The Tofane experience splits in two: the exposed, adrenaline-charged via ferrata climb of Tofana di Rozes and the far gentler cable-car approach to Tofana di Mezzo. Recurring themes in climbers' accounts: the dark ~500 m First World War tunnel on the Lipella route that requires a torch, the series of exposed ledges with sweeping Dolomite panoramas, and the cold, windy summit above 3,200 m even in summer. Non-technical visitors typically ride the Freccia nel Cielo cable car and take a short walk to the Tofana di Mezzo summit area.
