Description

Tochal (3,964 m) is the most prominent peak rising directly above northern Tehran, in the Central Alborz Mountains of Iran. It is hugely popular as a weekend destination for Tehranis and is often used as an acclimatisation peak before climbing Mount Damavand. On its slopes runs the Tochal Telecabin — one of the world’s longest gondolas (about 7.5 km) — carrying visitors from Velenjak (~1,900 m) up to Station 7 (~3,740 m) near the main ridge, where the Tochal ski resort sits. The classic hiking route starts from Darband in Tajrish (~1,800 m), climbs past Pas-Qaleh to the Shirpala shelter (2,750 m), then follows the ridge to the summit; alternative trailheads are at Velenjak and Darakeh. Because it is so easy to reach from the capital yet still tops out near 4,000 m, Tochal blends a city atmosphere with a genuine high-mountain experience — complete with real weather and cold hazards near its summit.

Routes

Rute klasik Darband – Shirpala – Puncak Tochal

Tochal’s classic route starts from Darband in the Tajrish area of northern Tehran (~1,800 m). Hikers climb past Pas-Qaleh to the Shirpala shelter (2,750 m) — many stay overnight here to split the ascent over two days — then follow the ridge past the Amiri/Siah Sang hut to the 3,964 m summit. Alternative trailheads are at Velenjak and Darakeh, plus a Jamshidieh–Kalchal–Piazchal line. The fastest option is to take the Tochal Telecabin from Velenjak up to Station 7 (~3,740 m), leaving only a short ridge hike to the top. Tochal is very popular as an acclimatisation peak before Mount Damavand; its main dangers are sudden weather changes, cold and wind at altitude, and snow/ice in winter.

Climbing Experiences

Tochal (3,964 m) is Tehran’s "backyard" mountain — hikeable straight from the city, ascendable by one of the world’s longest gondolas, or skiable in winter. The videos below show Tochal’s many faces: summer hiking from Darband, winter conditions on the ridge, the Telecabin gondola, and the ski resort near the summit. All links are verified live.
