Description

The Remarkables is a roughly 40 km mountain range on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu in Otago, on New Zealand's South Island, about 28 km from Queenstown. Its high point, Double Cone (around 2,319 m), sits beside Single Cone and is a popular alpine mountaineering objective, while the Lake Alta Track to a glacial tarn set in a cirque suits ordinary walkers. The range was formed by tectonic uplift and glacial carving and is built of schist and greywacke, giving it steep walls and dramatic amphitheatre valleys. It is also home to the Remarkables Ski Area, which averages about 3.67 m of snow annually. Its high elevation means it is cold and snow-prone year-round, with avalanche risk and rapidly changing weather. The range's striking profile has made it a frequent filming location, including for the Lord of the Rings films.

Routes

Lake Alta Track

Mudah–menengah (jalur alpine bertanda cairn)
3.70 km ±1–2 jam pulang-pergi (ke danau)

A short alpine route from the Remarkables Ski Area to Lake Alta, a glacial tarn set in a cirque. The rocky, cairned terrain suits general walkers in good weather but is still alpine, so warm clothing and weather awareness are needed. About 3.7 km with basin and mountain views.

Remarkables Grand Traverse (Single Cone + Double Cone)

Sulit — mountaineering alpine, butuh keahlian dan gear teknis
6.00 km Perjalanan sehari penuh (alpine)

An alpine traverse linking Single Cone and the high point, Double Cone (about 2,319 m). It is a technical route with exposure, scrambling, and frequent snow or ice — demanding mountaineering skill, navigation, and gear such as crampons and an ice axe depending on conditions. For experienced climbers only.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on The Remarkables split into two worlds. On one hand, the short Lake Alta Track to a glacial tarn is often shown as a relaxed day hike with basin panoramas and Queenstown views; creators highlight the cairned route, rocky alpine terrain, and the beauty of the tarn set in its cirque. On the other, ascents of Single Cone and Double Cone via the Grand Traverse and couloirs are genuine alpine mountaineering — those vlogs feature crampons and ice axes, exposure, and technical route-finding. Recurring themes include rapidly changing weather, the cold of altitude, and the alpine skills the summits demand. Many stress that Lake Alta suits general walkers, while the peaks are for experienced climbers only.
