Description
The Nut is a ~143 m volcanic plug that rises abruptly beside the small town of Stanley on Tasmania's north-west coast. Its basanite rock is dated to roughly 12.5–8.5 million years old — the solidified core of an extinct volcano whose outer cone has long since eroded away, leaving a flat-topped rock tower jutting into Bass Strait. Visitors reach the top via a short but very steep footpath or by chairlift, then follow a roughly 2 km loop track around the plateau rim with sweeping views of the sea, Stanley's harbour and the surrounding countryside. As one of at least 120 recognised volcanic centres across Tasmania, The Nut is both a geological landmark and a popular short walking destination.
Routes
The Nut Circuit Walk (jalur lingkar plateau)
SourceThe Nut Summit Track (jalur pendakian curam)
SourceClimbing Experiences
The Nut experience almost always centres on two things: a short but very steep climb to the top (or a chairlift ride), followed by the flat ~2 km loop track around the plateau rim. Videos and vlogs highlight the lung-busting initial ascent, 360° views over Bass Strait and the town of Stanley, and the breezy feel of the open summit. Several creators point out the chairlift option for those who prefer not to climb, and pair the visit with the nearby Highfield Historic Site.
