- -35.2670, 150.2830
- Difficulty
- Sangat berat — day walk pulang-pergi ±11–14 km dengan tanjakan ±780 m; menanjak panjang lalu ditutup rangkaian scramble batu sangat terekspos dan pitch berbantuan tali di dekat puncak. Butuh kebugaran baik, kepala tahan ketinggian, dan kemampuan navigasi (jalur sebagian tak bertanda)
- Best Season
Trailhead di Long Gully campground (Long Gully Road, Yadboro).
Description
The Castle is one of the most iconic peaks of the Budawangs in Morton National Park, New South Wales, Australia — a cliff-lined plateau of quartzose sandstone rising to about 843 metres (other sources cite roughly 820–847 m) in the heart of the Budawang Wilderness, inland from the coastal towns of Milton, Ulladulla and Mollymook. Its fortress-like form with a flat top gives it its name. Climbing The Castle is widely rated among Australia's most challenging and most rewarding day walks: from the Long Gully trailhead (Yadboro) the route crosses the Yadboro River then grinds steeply uphill for several kilometres before finishing with a series of highly exposed rock scrambles and rope-assisted pitches near the summit — the most nerve-wracking part, demanding a head for heights. The full return trip is about 11–14 km with nearly 800 m of ascent, typically taking 8–10 hours. Parts of the route are untracked, so navigation skills matter, and the terrain becomes far more dangerous when wet. From the summit plateau of rock platforms, small pools and low heath, views stretch east to the Pacific Ocean and in every other direction over the seemingly untouched cliffs and forests of the Budawangs.
Routes
Castle Walking Track (via Long Gully / Yadboro)
Sangat berat (T3) — scramble batu sangat terekspos & pitch berbantuan taliThe main route to the summit of The Castle. Starting from the Long Gully campground carpark (Long Gully Road, Yadboro), the track crosses the Yadboro River then climbs long and steeply to the base of The Castle's cliffs. The final section to the summit plateau is a series of highly exposed rock scrambles and rope-assisted pitches — the hardest part, demanding a head for heights; carrying a ~20 m rope is advised in case fixed ropes are absent. The return trip is about 11–14 km with nearly 800 m of ascent, typically 8–10 hours. Parts are untracked, so navigation matters, and the terrain is far more dangerous when wet.
SourcePendekatan via Monolith Valley (overnight)
Berat, multi-hari — cocok dikombinasikan dengan menginap di Budawang WildernessA longer, more scenic alternative: approaching The Castle through Monolith Valley, a famous valley of pillared rock formations in the Budawangs. It is usually done as an overnight trip combining wilderness exploration, iconic rock formations and the climb of The Castle. It demands navigation skills and self-sufficient camping logistics in a remote area without facilities.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of climbing The Castle consistently rank it among Australia's most challenging and most memorable day walks. Nearly every source describes the same pattern: a long, steep approach from Long Gully (Yadboro), then a final section of highly exposed rock scrambling and rope-assisted pitches before the summit plateau. Vlogs and trip reports stress the full-day duration (~8–10 hours), the fitness and head for heights required, the danger when the route is wet, and the need to navigate untracked sections. Other recurring themes are the extraordinary summit views — east to the Pacific Ocean and in every direction over the cliffs and forests of the Budawangs — and the deep satisfaction of overcoming the nerve-wracking rope sections.
