Description

Telica (1,061 m) is one of Nicaragua's most active volcanoes, rising in the Cordillera de los Maribios not far from the colonial city of León. Its deep crater frequently vents gas and ash, and at night often reveals a red glow of lava at its floor — the main draw that makes it a popular guided trekking destination. The relatively short but open, dusty ascent is usually timed so hikers reach the crater rim near sunset to take in the line of Maribios volcanoes and the Pacific before watching the crater embers glow as the sky darkens. Many operators offer overnight camping near the summit. Telica belongs to the Telica–Rota complex and is monitored as an active volcano by the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of hiking Telica almost always center on watching the lava glow at the crater floor from dusk into darkness. Vlogs show the relatively short but dusty, open afternoon ascent from near León, reaching the unfenced crater rim for views along the Maribios volcanic chain, then waiting for the crater's red embers to light up. Several experiences also capture heightened activity — venting gas and ash — a reminder that Telica is an active volcano best approached with a guide.
