Description

Te Mata Peak is a 399-metre summit south of the city of Hastings, rising above the village of Havelock North in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's North Island. Unlike many New Zealand peaks that are volcanic, Te Mata is formed of uplifted limestone — a sedimentary ridge that is an iconic landmark of the Hawke's Bay wine country. A sealed road climbs to the summit lookout, making it easy to reach, but the roughly 99-hectare park around it offers a network of walking and mountain-biking tracks for all levels. Popular trails such as the Rongokako (Blue) take casual walkers to the summit, while the Giant Circuit (Red) is more demanding, with a steep switchback climb up the southern face and some narrow, nervy sections. From the top the view opens wide: the Tukituki River, Craggy Range winery, the Heretaunga plains, and the Ruahine, Kaweka and Maungaharuru Ranges in the distance. The ridge's name and shape are woven into the Māori legend of the giant Te Mata o Rongokako.

Routes

Giant Circuit (Red) — sirkuit menantang sisi selatan

Berat (strenuous) — tanjakan berkelok curam, bagian sempit terekspos
5.10 km ±2–3 jam

The most challenging circuit in Te Mata Park: a steep switchback climb up the southern face to the summit with unrivalled views. Some sections narrow and become exposed — one blog notes the track shrinking to about 25 cm — demanding care, especially in wind. Elevation gain is around 315 metres.

Rongokako (Blue) — jalur santai ke puncak

Sedang — bergradasi baik, tanjakan bertahap
±1,5–2 jam

A popular trail that takes walkers to the 399-metre summit of Te Mata without the hardest sections of the Giant circuit. Well graded and suitable for most people; most finish it in about 1.5 hours although signage suggests around 2 hours. The summit opens onto views of the Heretaunga plains and distant ranges.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Te Mata Peak split into two flavours: the ease of reaching the summit by sealed road or gentle trail, and the challenge of the steep Giant circuit. Writers describe the remarkably wide summit views over the Heretaunga plains, the Tukituki River, and distant ranges, while cautioning that the Giant (Red) trail on the southern face narrows and turns nervy in places. Other recurring themes are the variety of tracks for all fitness levels, the calm park setting near the wine village of Havelock North, and the Māori legend of the giant whose form the ridge is said to trace.
