Description

Te Manga (652 m) is the highest point of Rarotonga and of the whole Cook Islands, rising in the island's interior — the eroded remnant of an ancient volcano. Though modest in height by Pacific standards, climbing it ranks among the region's toughest hikes: a roughly 7.7 km return route through dense tropical forest, up a narrow 'razorback' ridge with drop-offs on both sides, and over two vertical rock walls fitted with old fixed ropes. The near-permanently wet, moss-covered rock makes footing as slick as ice, while vegetation sometimes hides deep holes. The trail is poorly marked and easy to lose, especially on descent, so an offline map or a local guide is advised. The reward is a 360-degree panorama over Rarotonga's lagoon, reef and coastline. Note that Te Manga (the true summit) is distinct from the more popular 'Needle' / Te Rua Manga on the cross-island track.

Jalur satu-satunya yang lazim ke puncak tertinggi Rarotonga: dimulai dari jalan berkerikil lalu menanjak tajam menembus hutan tropis, menaiki dua tebing vertikal berbantuan tali tetap tua, dan menyusuri punggungan 'razorback' sempit berjurang di kedua sisi menuju puncak. Batu hampir selalu basah dan berlumut sehingga licin seperti es. Jalur tak berambu jelas dan rawan salah arah saat turun — bawa peta offline atau pemandu lokal.
